Hello from Afghanistan by way of Ft. Bragg NC.
« on: November 02, 2012, 06:51:10 am »
Hello,

Me: Originally from Bakersfield Ca. Joined the Army in 2000 I'm an 18B currently(Special Forces Weapons SGT) Always owned lifted Chevy's. Currently in Afghanistan.

Truck(what you really care about lol): 1978 Chevy picked it up for 750 dollars a few months ago in not so great shape.

Stock 350(pretty sure it'e the orignal engine completely stock from 1978 minus AC someone took out. but makes good compresion and sounds strong)
TH350(I rebuilt and put in B&M shift kit had no reverse)
NP205(heavy $#*())
Appears to be a 4" lift and sits on 33's
Interior is non existant

Plans:
Paint and body: Truck goes off to paint and body very soon Color scheme is orange with black bumper, grille, single fat racing stripe and tailgate lettering.
Body:  front bumper, grill, headlight bezels, hood, fenders, doors, cab floor, cab supports, bed sides, roll pan.
Interior: Dash pad, Dakots digital guages, carpet, headliner, seat, doors and stereo sys.
Engine: Crate turn key 350 HO, A/C system
Axles: Dana 60's,
Transfer: twin stick the NP205
Suspension: 8-12in lift (haven't made up my mind yet)
Rims and tires: 35" tires at a min., probably going to stay with 15" rims
Bed: not sure yet I want to be able to put stuff in it so thinking of steering way from the expensive nice wood. maybe diamond plate the sides and treated lumber and new hardware. getting rid of the chains or and possibly putting an LED strip in the roll pan or welding up the stake pockets and putting some Caddy tail lights in them(how do you think that would look?)

Here she is like a battered woman still faitfully running after all the beatings from the previous owner but I'll fix her up and make her pretty again(at a great cost).

If you know of awesome vedors or shops in my area let me know it would be much appreciated. I look forward to being an active member of the forum and gaining knowledge and good times from the members.

Welcome from Alaska.  Thanks for your service.  The sheet metal actually looks to be in decent shape.  I hope you could keep the sport mirrors.  I think they look the best on the swb trucks.  Maybe you could find some 'exotic' wood in Afghanistan for your truck's bed.  lol.  Are you sure it is an NP 205 iron t-case and not an NP 203 iron t-case?  For '78, the NP 203 usually was found behind an automatic and the NP 205 was behind a manual trans.  I suppose a p/o could have swapped things around, though.  Stay safe and hope to hear more on your build as it progresses.
