1986 Chevy c20
« on: December 18, 2012, 01:06:54 PM »
Well I recently traded a gun I had $500 in for a 1986 Chevy c20 with 155k miles on it. The truck has a 454/th400 in it with 3.73 gears. The truck has the typical rust for my area which includes the cab corners, rockers, bed sides and that is about it for me. This is going to be a slow build as I just bought a house and the holidays are making things tight for me but Im ready to get the body straightened out and rust free. The overall goal for the truck is a comfy daily driver that looks good runs good and is powered by a ppump or possibly a vp cummins transplant in front of a 47rh or nv4500  Here are some pictures of what Im starting with and any ideas are appreciated.

The first update is this, I just scored this on sale and after a military discount only paid $404 for it. Now I have to buy a 100amp fuse box and my a few other things to have it hooked up in my garage.

Very nice first cousin to my 85 C20.  I love it being a Silverado with manual windows... and camper mirrors

Not a bad start to a build, good luck and keep us updated.

Well I got a deal on a 350 for my truck. I found a 1990 chevy on craigslist the guy was parting out and  called him it has a TBI350 with a 700r4 trans. He is selling me the complete motor with all accessories, harness, computer, and the transmission thats bolted to it for 500. I went and test drove the truck today and it started up, idled and ran through the gears fine. it needs new manifolds, and some cleaning but I can put it in the garage and clean on it for the next week or so until Im ready to the 454 and put this in.

Well I picked up a 1990 TBI 350 with a700r4 tranny today. I paid $550 for the motor, with all the accessories, the TBI wiring harness, computer, flowtech long tube headers, a full length 1 piece drive shaft and the 700r4 cross member so hopefully I can make that work and the transmission. It all came out of a truck I personally drove and this it was a heck of a deal. I also got an original rust free drivers door for $80 bucks..

I know I'm going to spend a day or so going through the harness getting rid of all the stuff I do not need from the old truck. Im going to clean up the motor, pull the transmission and replace the rear main seal, and every other gasket I can get to easily... Change the fluids in the trans and the motor...

You are going to need about everything in that donor harness, short of the starter, alternator and AC wiring which should be in the 86 already.  There will be a few wires running from the box that will need to be used, should be four...

Yea I pulled everything in the truck so there are wires that ran to the blower motor, a/c, and a bunch of other stuff that definently do not go to the TBI setup. I have to find a wiring diagram to see what wires stay, and what wires go. The guy I bought the motor and trans off of said he did the same swap into his TJ and said there are only like four wires that you have to worry about, he said a few get a 12v and one or two get grounded everything else plugs in.

I also got around to buying a few parts today. I bought a bosch 13077 HEATED O2 sensor, weld in O2 bungfor my headers, Airtex E8094 (cost me $38 after gift cards and stuff I had), and 30 ft of an assortment of new wire loom to replace the junk on my current wiring harness
