Where do I start?

My 1985 sierra classic 4x4 just started boiling white smoke and then started running hot on my way to work. I know its bad but its my only ride and I need advice on where to start. Am I lookin at an engine swap?

I know its probably a blown head gasket but how difficult is this to do myself, in my garage?

More info would help us guide you through this. What makes you think it is a blown head gasket? How "good" do you want to fix it? How old is the engine? I don't know your skill level so if this sounds really basic, bear with me.

It depends on where the "boiling white smoke" (steam) was coming from.  If the steam was coming from under the hood and it then started running hot, I would first check for:
1- a broken hose or belt
2- bad radiator cap
3- radiator leak
4- a bad engine soft plug (freeze plug).
5- heater core (leaking into the cab)

Temporarily fill the system with water to see if you can spot the leak. You may need to run the engine as it may only leak under pressure.

A blown head gasket, cracked head, or block usually blows steam out the tail pipe. It also can put coolant into the pan (looks like creamed coffee) and/or oil in the radiator.

Any of it can be fixed in a garage with the proper tools and equipment. Get a good repair manual to help guide you and a knowledgeable friend to help or look over your shoulder as well.

This not meant to offend you in any way....If you are asking how hard it is to do a head gasket then it will be fairly hard for you. However if you are mechanically inclined at all the you can do it. Read up on it and make sure you understand everything before you start. Plan on the whole weekend being consumed if you have never done any work like that.

Just an update I purchased a Phoenix Engine and I'm almost done with the swap.  I appreciate all the help.
