Truck Bouces Like Crazy
« on: February 11, 2013, 05:41:23 pm »
A while back I had the axle seals in the front replaced. Its a 83 k10 with a gm 10-bolt btw. The truck set for a while till I got my license, and I noticed when I started driving it the axle started to leak again. I was driving down the road and the truck started bouncing bad, it feels like the front wheel is coming off the ground. I didn't pay much mind to it the first time it happened, but it did it again a couple days later. The day after that it did it twice, and the day after that it did it twice within one mile. So I brought it home and parked it. Someone told me that the guy who did the front seals for didn't put some kind of clips in right. Does anyone know why its doing this?

My guess is shocks are shot. You will bounce pretty well without them.

It aint the shocks. Because I don't have to go over bump or anything for it to happen. Plus everytime it happened the leak got worse.

Maybe u joint trying to freeze up which will make it jerk which will jerk the axle. Which will damage seal

I don't know. It doesn't jerk. It bounces up and down. I ain't for sure but it feels like the wheel is coming off the ground.

Front for sure. Seems to be the passenger side that's bouncing.

Also the passenger side was pouring out axle fluid.

It has to be that u joint in the knuckle or the axle bearings in the hub IMO. That's the only rhe that will let the axle move in there

The axle seals are replaced from the inside. So the differential would have to come out. At the knuckle end just the spindle comes off to pull the shaft, so I cant think of anything he did that would cause the front to bounce. Spin all the shafts make sure everything is working right and smooth.  I'd pull the front differential cover off and take a look. It might be possible that the side gears slid out of the differential case if the differential was rotated while the axles were out.

Im gonna drop the truck off tomorrow to get the seals replaced and ill have him inspect everything. Im also gonna replace u-joints, balance tires, and get it aligned. Hope that will fix the problem. But one other thing is (I think, but not for sure) Im running the truck in all wheel drive. 2H and N in the transfer case wont work for some reason. Something just starts spinning when I put it in gear. But the hubs aint locked in.

Did you get a answer to this problem or do you still have the problem ?

We took the inspection plate off and the seals looked fine. We noticed the lock out hubs were different so we replaced them. I thought that fixed the problem but today it started doing it again. It feels like its coming mostly coming from the front passenger side wheel, and the rotor on that side is damaged pretty bad. Could that be the problem?

I have had 3 different (brands) vehicles that the rotors were warped and caused sever bouncing.  2 of them did it between certain mph ( 35-65 mph), and the Chevy did it all the time.  Was like that when I bought it, changed both front rotors and did brake job and problems went away.
