86 chevy k10 6cyl distributor

hello all im new to the site,i have a chevy k10 as mentioned in the subject line,truck will not fire,new distributor,plugs,wires,getting fuel,got the truck in this condition,was out of time on the distributor found top dead center on cylinder 1 and rotated the shaft accordingly,before i did that the engine would backfire through the carb,now nothing,engine will turn but no spark,cranking kinda slow even with a good battery,are there and free schematics out there for the timing that might help me out?engine number is 262 4bbl. 4.3 thanks guys for the help

Are you sure the number one cyclinder is at the top?  Are you getting no spark at all?

yeah after some research i found the correct engine code for the year truck,got the no.1 tdc i have 2 clips on the back of my dist,and one has the wire pulled out of the clip.got it rigged up it cranks faster than before,but still no spark,before i had back fire thro the carb and later after adj,the exhaust.once i got the #1 set tdc nothing,think it may be a bad pick up coil or something related?pulled plug #1 left plug on wire and no pop,spark,nothing thx for any suggestions

Basics first as I am not sure what you are doing with the adjusting of exhaust, but...  BTW the engine code is pretty much irrelevant a SBC in an SBC only internals are different...
1)Are you getting power to the distributor ignition wire with the key in run position.
2)there are 2 clips on the cover, the one closes to the front of the truck is ING, the other is the TACH signal, they are labeled, so are you connected to the correct one?
3)How did you get to TDC?  The #1 piston is at the top on both compression and exhaust stroke.  If it was backfiring you had it TDB with it on exhaust 180 degrees out.
4) with is on TDC and the distributor in, is the rotor pointing to the post relatively close to where the plug that goes to the #1 cylinder.  BTW, the #1 cylinder is at the front on the drivers side...
5)With power getting to the distributor, and you crank it over and with a screwdriver resting in the boot are you getting spark?

okay, I have tdc on compression stoke for sure.rotor is turned as close as i can get to the post for #1 plug,getting power to dist,and checked for spark again,and nothing.could it be pickup coil?thanks for the help

It could be but most likely it is the ignition module. Now the cranking condition you describe sounds like an unwanted voltage drop and voltage spikes can easily take out the ignition module. Make sure you clean the connections and secure them for the ground circuit from the battery to the cylinder block, to the body and to the frame. Make sure the starter is secure as well. Ensure the positive connection is tight too.

You can test the module with a test light if you have one or since you are a pro at taking in and out the ditributor now is a good time to replace the module and the pickup coil.
