Slack in throttle cable
« on: April 04, 2013, 05:49:46 pm »
I have an 84 with original Qjet and I assume original throttle cable. The gas pedal is pretty close to the floor and I can lift it up and feel the cable tighten. At the carburetor I can push down on the cable between the intake mounted bracket and the carb linkage and feel the cable tighten. I can push the cable down at the carb probably a 1/2 inch.

Do the cables stretch over the years? Seems like it should have very little play in order to get WOT.

I don't know if routing of the cable makes a big difference or not. Mine comes out of the firewall and loops down and then back up to the intake bracket.

The cables don't really stretch so much as the pedal arm under the dash bends with normal use, so that you gradually lose throttle opening.  Have a helper watch for WOT and rebend the arm.  You should have some slack in the cable so you're assured of complete throttle closing.

Ok, thanks.......I will bend the arm back......the bottom of the pedal closest to the floor, just about touches the floor

Good to know thanks.  When adjusting my TV cable the pedal to the floor won't open the carb to WOT, so this will help!
