VIN Question
« on: May 18, 2013, 06:40:25 pm »
Ok, so the truck is a 1979 Chevrolet K10 Scottsdale 4x4 auto, 305 from an '85 something (according to previous owner), D44 up front, GM 12 bolt in back. Not sure which transmission, or which gear ratios for axles.

I have done some searching on a few forums and the internet, but I'm stumped by what the R over the 4 means in my VIN, unless it's a Heavy 1/2 ton.

I apologize, I forgot to specify in my question. I've looked at VIN decoders, but what does the R over the 4 mean? 400 sm blk 4 bbl?

In 25 plus years of playing with these trucks I have NEVER seen a VIN tag that looked like that!

I've never seen one either. What does the VIN read on the title?

She might have a good point.  How many of us have inspected VIN#'s from vehicles in other countries.

In 1979 -80 the 3rd digit on a VIN is the engine code. 'R' would have been a 400cid V8. Why there's a 4 under it? I have no idea.
