Spare tire mount.
« on: June 22, 2013, 09:55:59 pm »
84 3/4 ton big block, dana rear end.  Ok there are the particulars.  I just bought this truck to replace my 85 1/2 ton and this a a true find.  The truck was always used as a light farm truck, hadn't been waxed in years so I brought the paint back and it looks amazing, very very little rust and just a well taken care of truck.  The truck didn't come with a spare tire and after researching it a little I found out that a spare tire was actually an option back then and if you declined the option you didn't get the mounting hardware on the truck.  If I understand correctly there were two spare tire mounting options, 1) a standard crossmember that the tire is affixed to and 2) an actual slide out belly so to speak.  There is no evidence of either so I'm assuming it never had a spare mounted other than floating around in the bed of the truck.  Does anyone make the underside mounting kit, basically everything needed to mount the spare under the bed?  I guess I could take it to a welding shop and have them work something up but if someone has a better idea I'd be interested in it.  thoughts?

Maybe I am just speaking for myself but... Have you ever tried to muscle a LT235 85R16 Load rate E out from under a truck?  Not a fun experience, add night, rain or snow, it sucks.  Great time to have AAA. That being said I would go with a newer model crank up cable type and make it fit.  I am sure others will chime in on this.

Had one experience with a tire under the bed and I'll never do that again, lol, I made my own in bed mount pretty simple, or you can buy aftermarket ones too.

i think someone here salvaged the setup from a lumina van which has the crank/pulley system which seemed to work well.

i tried fitting the astro temp spare behind the seat, but it wont fit.  Of course that wouldn't work for you as you have a 3/4 ton.   Actually, that may be another idea---do astros also have the crank/cable/pulley system that lumina vans had?
