8ft bed bolts together ??
« on: July 18, 2013, 09:49:44 pm »
I own a 1986 Chevy c10 Custom deluxe fleetside 4 on the floor w an 8 ft bed .... That's a lot of info ! Ok so the bedside fenders need some work they are not horrible but the previous owner painted the truck and you can now see the rust underneath the paint job ... It's kinda bubbling ... And he must have hit a dumpster cause it has a nice long scratch/dent along the passenger side bedside fender . Ok so I have got several quotes to fix the random issues and the lowest was $2200 . But I'm thinking I could order all new fenders, tailgate, bed, end panel and have it painted for cheaper... My thought process is no labor on their end no prep work just a paint job ...

My question is "do these 4 body parts bolt together" would I just lay the new bed floor down and bolt the fenders in and end plate ??!

Thanks guys !!

from what I know the bed floor blots to the frame but is welded to the bed side skirts (or as you called bed fenders) and there is actually an inner and outer bed side that are welded to everything also, so know you can not just bolt together. You would be better off finding a bed that is in bed condition then yours and just buy and put it on.

Few years back I robbed the bed floor from a square and used it in another bed . I remember 4 small welds that I used a die grinder on . two were at the back of the bed . right by the tailgate  . two were up front , the the bed had to be up side down to get too .

Beg , borrow or steal some air tools . There are a gang of bolts in these . plenty of your favorite rust buster will help .

If there are more than two welds at the back then someone else put them there. All of the pieces bolt together however if you buy aftermarket panels and assume they are going to go together easily and not require tons of body work to make look correct you are mistaken. If yours can be salvaged you are better off repairing them.

I put together a complete aftermarket bed for my 74 which you can see here:

All bolt together except the two welds at the bottom of the rear post to the floor.
