Want to make a hood lock for my 78
« on: October 24, 2013, 03:39:31 pm »
hi everyone i have a 78 k20 and live in a pretty bad area, iv had my gas siphoned a couple times i now have locking gas caps but that wont stop them from cutting my lines. What im worried about now is you can walk right up to my 78 and pop the hood from outside no lock or anything and im putting in a new small block very soon and dont want anyone unbolting my msd box and little things they can just grab. i thought about running a cable from the hood down threw the core support to the frame or somthing with a padlock so the hood cannot be opened... but does anybody have any better ideas? any ideas help thanks

Mr. gasket hood locks. Like the kind you see on old hot rods

What's under the hood??? If you have to ask maybe we shouldn't race...

I wonder how hard it would be to use the 81-87 interior hood release set up?

Mr. Gasket 1472  or  Spectre 42613  or  Trans-Dapt 4062,  for example...

I've used a version of these for years in conjunction with the factory inside release and have been very satisfied.  But, inspect the pins before installing, since some iterations use cast pins while others use steel pins.

i would much rather have someone siphon my gas then punch a hole in it and let it drain all over the place. its hard if you cant protect your own stuff from the junkies around. around here we are now facing a heron problem, young kids too. had a tool box my wife got for me one year stolen off my screened in porch. thats one of the good thing about where we used to live on a old farm. you hardly saw anyone around and if you didnt know them they prob had a gun pointed at them lol

thanks for the replies! i have seen some locks on old rat rods i will look into those mr gasket locks. ill be putting in a small block 400 that a friend started building for me last may, its .30 over with a mild cam. I will be putting a msd box on the fire wall and msd wires and distiburter and have ceramic coated headers new edelbrock performer intake and edelbrock 750 and chrome air filter and chrome valve covers. so i dont want some junkie poppin my hood when im not home and seein a clean motor and tryin to grab anything they can

i dont know if it would help, depends on your neighbors. unless they are the junkies.  but an alarm system also might help some

Shot gun with buck shot or 50 Cal bullets to stop their truck engine :-) either way one should always have some sort of tracking device installed.

This was a factory option 77-80 so just get the factory setup for one either used or replacement will do.

not sure where you live but if a junkie is mechanically inclined enough to remove parts from the engine bay then I think they would rather steal the whole truck. Either way an alarm would do you better than locking hood pins and locking gas cap. The locking hood pins are more useful to prevent the hood from flying up than theft IMO. The Mossberg Shotgun will do you no good if somone took a sparkplug to the window, that is virtually silent.

Skip the locking pins and get the real locks as posted. Then get an alarm with a proximity sensor wired in. This way if anything gets close to the truck the alarm will go off. And the sensor range is adjustable.  :-) this is the way too go. And keep that mossy handy x :-)
