Just jack up the front end. Rock the wheel in and out at 12 and 6 o'clock you shouldn't feel any play.

To adjust, do not over tighten them. Tighten the castle nut while spinning the hub until snug then back it off to the next key hole on the castle nut. I am assuming it's a 2WD?

rocking the wheel at 12 and 6 can also show if a lower ball joint is bad. I would replace front rotors and install new Timken bearings if you are unsure and truck has a lot of miles.
