Looking to put a sm365 trans in my 78 4x4 truck. It now has a 3 speed on the tree, of which parts are pretty non-existent. I have located a couple of the 365's, but they are for  2 wheel drive. Anyone know what would need to be done to make one of these work for me.....thanks the 365 is the four speed with the granny low.....

I think you're meaning the SM465.

     What transmission do you have now ?  Is it standard or automatic ?  The SM465 are pretty common transmissions, a lot of junk yards should have them.

it is a three speed  Tremec that is hooked to a np205. Not much info out there on this trans, but I have an old Chiltons that shows it as a 77 mm in it diagram of the trans. The 2 wheel drive sm465 are pretty common around here, but not the 4 wheel drive, therefore my original question.

you would need a output shaft from a sm465 that is all ready 4x4 and mated to a 205 that is like yours. the sm645 4x2 uses only a 35 spline output shaft. while the 4x4 uses a 10 spline  (older) and a 32(newer) in 78 is when sm made the change so you should be looking for a 10 spline 205 they came off the sm465 i wana say its the only 10 spline 205 that you could use.

so lets round that up, first get your 4x2 sm465 then find a sm465 take them both completely apart swap shafts then find a adapter plate for the sm465 and np205 then find a np205 that came off a sm465 4x4. but if you find a sm465 4x4 with a np205 you should just skip everything i just said and use the sm465 4x4 with np 205

To make life a little easier, find a 1980 donor truck, it'll have everything you want. The 205 was reputedly the only t-case used that year.

The adapter housing and the adapter sleeve are key here. They used to make a hybrid a coupler that was fine spline on one end and coarse on the other.  But I believe a custom adapter housing was needed because it was longer due to machining restrictions.  ORD still has both of them if you want to buy new but they also have used a-housings.  http://www.offroaddesign.com/catalog/transfercaseparts.htm

Finding a donor 1980 truck that is in a salvage yard that still has the SM465/NP205 would be a feat also, I would look for a SM465/NP205 Donor.

OORRRRRRR find an 85 it'll have the hydraulic clutch setup that's what i did for my truck. no routine adjusting needed
