making an air cleaner with dual intakes..

So as the title says, I'm going to attempt to make a air cleaner with dual snorkels/openings/mouths/whatever you call them...  I remember seeing one on a truck when I was a kid and thought it was cool.  I also remember either Olds or Buick had them on some of the models.

So I went to the local pick-n-pull and found some donor air cleaner assemblies...





cut up the rusty one for the snorkel and placed it in some distilled vinegar to soak... after 24 hours and a brush with a toothbrush they look like this...





so now to trim it up so I can graft it into the other air cleaner assembly.

that's exactly what I'm going for.  that's awesome.  if that's an actually Olds air cleaner assembly I bet he's pissed off some Olds guys.  lol.

    I believe the story goes he used to have an Old's diesel in his truck before he switched it to gas.

so I took out the piece, washed it off, dried it as quick as I could and primed it.  it still did a little flash rust it a couple of areas.  took a before picture of my original air cleaner lid before I put it in the tub of vinegar.



then started working on the air cleaner.  cut out the opening for the 2nd snorkel..



fit the two together..



tacked and then welded...





cleaned it up and primered it...



and painted.  very happy with the outcome.  its actually a satin finish so it won't be this shiny.

thanks guys.  now I just have to find some factory intake tubing.  I did find one but it was trashed on the air cleaner side.

Everytime I think about this I want to build it more and more. I should just go start on it because it's driving me crazy.

An easier way to do it is to either use a holesaw, drill Two holes & connect them where the second snorkle will go or a small wiz wheel & cut a rectangle. On the "scrap" air cleaner, use a wiz wheel on grinding wheel on the inside 4 corners & grind through the little spotwelds & remove the snorkle...this way the air cleaner base remains all one-piece, weld the snorkle back on from the inside & there is no finish work.
If a person doesn't have access to a welder, a 1/4" "flange" of the scrap air cleaner could be left on the snorkle & pop rivets used in the 4 corners to attach it to the air cleaner.

Mine is an Original Oldsmobile air cleaner, so I removed the original long tapered snorkle with the bell mouth on the end & installed both of the truck snorkles. 
I also clocked the vacuum pull-off to route the hoes so they looked like a factory deal. Hope this Helps, Lorne

Impressive.  You did it the professional way!  I did the same thing Haulin just posted above using two tbi-era intakes.

The 66-68 Toronado had a very handsome dual snorkel air filter
