help deciding on a combo
« on: June 14, 2014, 12:41:21 pm »
Hello i am new to this fourm and got a buch of questions
I did search and learned alot but i would like good honest advice and opions
Truck i will be putting this in is a 85 ccsb that is just getting started on
I posted all that in members rides
So i have a few options i can go with and thease parts i have on hand
I have a 5.7 vortec in a 96 chevy 4x4 no motor or case but the rest is there
A 90 chevy 4x4 tbi 5.7 with a fresh 700r
I also have 454 with a th400
I also have a 99 burban with a 5.7 vortec and 4l80
It works but would need a rebuild in the next yr or 2
I like power and i am not easy on stuff the truck might see some minor off roading and showing off lol
Mpg is kinda important i would like to be able to drive it as much as
possible i was gonna do a cummins swap but i csn buy alot of gas for 3-5k that would be the cost to do it
I will be selling what ever i dont use to fund this so if i gotta buy adapers or wireing stuff or tcase that is fine
Thanks for the help

So far after alot of thinking this is so far the cheapest and easyiest combo
5.7 vortec 383 kit convert it to carb
Proubly do a custom cam from bullet or comp i have had good luck with them in the past
Good set of headers good tq converter
I would like to use a 700r its fresh and i gotta a tcase and adapter to make itbwork
But i just dont know if will hold up? Pushing 33's with 373 gears
Maybe my th400 will be ok on the rpms with my tire and gear choice
I can also go with 4.10s i got them also

if you keep your post to one on the same topic. more people will help out and not be repeating the same options as others

If gas mileage is even remotely a consideration then you can rule out the big block and the 4.10's

Mpg is a factor i think everyone wants to get the most out of what they got
I was thinking about this and i am stuck
Do i need overdrive and if i decide to run 35's
With 373 gears mabey the tourq of the big block is the way to go?
90% of my driveing will be 55mph and under and dont plan on pulling much of anything
My 454 only has 45k and the th400 shifts like new
With a good set of headers some differnt heads and a good cam
Maybe i could 10-12 mpg if i decide to run a 5.7 vortec with a 700r
Maybe i wont see much better mpg?

When i built mine it was meant to be a street/strip toy so mileage was never a factor. With that said I run a 30" tall tire, 4.11 gears and a 1:1 high gear as would also be found in all TH350's and 400's. At 55mph I turn a solid 2900 RPM. I dont have any idea what it gets for mileage, heck i'd hate to even know. The taller 35" tires would help but not a lot. Overdrive would definitely help but then so would higher gears. I dont think 10-12 mpg is out of the question for any of those combos if geared right. 454s make a mountain of low end torque but if you pair them with low gears you can expect more like 7-8mpg

Thanks for the reply
I thought i had my mind made up
5.7 vortec converted to carb with cam and headers
700R 3.73 gears and eather 33's or 35's
But the more i think about i just dont think the 700
Will last long and i dont do much driving over 60 mph
And it wont be a daily driver
Since i have a good running 454 and good th400
I am thinking some better heads smaller cc's get the comp
Up to a safe pump gas number do sine head work good intake carb and
Headers i think i would have a cheap and solid combo?
