Intermittent Starting Issue
« on: June 22, 2014, 11:56:43 am »
1982 C10 with a 305 V8 Rochester 4 barrel M4ME carb. When I go to start my truck it will crank like it's going to start but sometimes it never will. I try to start it a couple of times and when it won't, if I just let it sit for about 10-15 minutes and try it again, it fires right up without any hesitation whatsoever. This happens intermittently so it doesn't appear to be a "cold start" issue or "only after it is warmed up" kind of thing that I can tell. It seems it will only have that one issue for the day and once you get it fired up there will be no more problems with it starting for the rest of the day. I drive it 3 or 4 days out of the week a few miles to work. I read that a faulty pickup coil or control module could be the issue so I just bought a re-manufactured distributor that came with the coil and module and dropped that in about 2 weeks ago. There is also a new cap, rotor, ignition coil, ignition switch, plugs, wires, starter and alternator. I am by no means a mechanic, I am just trying to learn a thing or two with this truck. Also, replaced within the past year are the fuel pump, fuel filter (couple of times), fuel sending unit and gas tank. The previous owner replaced the carburetor but I know that when I start it in the morning (and it actually fires up) it idles high to warm up the engine but it will not come out of the higher RPM's until I hit the gas pedal and then it brings the RPM's back down to normal idle. Not sure if that could have anything to do with my starting issue but just wanted to throw that in just in case. I don't really know where to start looking next or what troubleshooting I should try. Anyone have any ideas?

Is the ESC disconnected?  I am going to assume it is.  It sounds to me it is carb related.  Not enough choke if I had to venture a guess.  Fast idle cam sticking and out of adjustment.  Wrong carb application for your 305.  Just a few things it could be.  I am sure others will chime in.

ESC disconnected? I think it is connected if I am thinking of the right thing. Should it be disconnected?

http://forum.73-87chevytrucks.com/smforum/index.php?topic=24680.msg206194#msg206194 is on the ESC.  When they start going bad they cause intermittent problems.
