Heavy Half Ton Exhaust Question

I'm putting a new exhaust system onto my truck. It's an '86 C10 Heavy Half Ton truck, so it doesn't have Catalytic Converters stock. When putting this new exhaust on there, do I have to run Catalytic Converters since it's "aftermarket"?

I never seen a 86 C10 heavy half so verify by VIN to make sure.  Depending on how your state is you may have an issue.  Does your gas gauge say Unleaded Fuel Only?  It is a Federal Law that if your truck came with a converter it is supposed to have one on.  Some states are strict while others could care a less.  My $.02...

Newbie here, what would tell you it's a heavy half in the vin, forth digit = E?

4 th digit is braking and 8 th digit is engine.  Then where it was manufactured for told you what driveability and emission controls it was originally came with.  Manual trans differed from automatics, high altitude, low altitude or both, then CA had special one

Looking in my book, C10's had 305's as the largest gas engine and all 305's had catalytic converters.  The heaviest GVW 3/4T with the larger engines 350/454 didn't have catalytic converters in stick shift I know for certain.

the GVWR for heavy halfs had to be 6,050 and above, and afik it was only 75-80 when the government started putting emissions on vehicles gm made the heavy halfs to bypass these laws. then the government changed the laws to require all trucks under 8,500GVWR to have cats.

I'm at 6,050 for my GVWR, or so it says on the sticker in my glove box. when I looked under the truck, I saw no cats.

"Light Duty trucks are 6001-8500 GVWR" are the same thing as 0-8500 and require emission testing after 1979 this is the clean air act of 1977

I guess that makes me a polluter for right now... Good thing I don't have emissions in Kansas, and it's already registered in the state.

also fyi before these emissions problems the ford ½ton was called the f100 they did their own "heavy half" which is known as the f150 and they just kept the name

In NY you are exempt from the emissions inspection program if your vehicle is 26 model years old or older.

in maryland you dont no inspection if your vehicle is over 20. in Delaware you have emissions only at idle if its 20 or 25 cant remember but you have driving restrictions with these tags ie only on weekends or to shows not DD, but for the most part if you dont make yourself to look like a butt they will leave you alone

Oh, P.S.,

In my opinion, if the truck never came with cats, then you don't need to add them.  Aftermarket or stock exhaust doesn't matter.

if the truck never came with them then no, but the when a truck is 30+ years old most on here weren't even born when it came out you also cant go by a sticker in the glove box cause they can me switched out
