My 84 M1028 has 9 leafs in the spring pack + 1 overload spring.
The Military rated it at 5/4 ton with a 9400 pound GVW.

This is going to depend on the year, type of suspension (STD vs HD) and Series of truck and bodystyle..  So you are going to have answers all over the place.

Right, that's why i was curious.  i've driven other 1/2 tons and the ride was really cushy, well certainly more cushy than mine.

HD springs are going to ride much rougher than std.
Standard typically has 3 leafs.

On topic, how few leaves do I need to reliably locate the axle?  I was thinking 2 possibly 3 to locate but I would be really excited to hear one leave is enough.

My 69 Camaro still has the factory mono leaf rear suspension (the 10 bolt axle was swapped for a Dana 60 in the late 70's).

Da67goatman, you will not be able to get by with just one leave there will be no stability of the rearend.
On a 3 leaf setup don't remove more than one, on a 5 don't remove more than 2.  This does not count the overload, you can pull it out immediately, but IF you pull leafs don't through it away as you may end up putting it back in.
