Drive shaft /Trans Swap Question
« on: November 19, 2014, 02:33:50 pm »
ok I have a 82 gmc serria c1500 2wd with v8 and th350 I would live to put a stud trans in it.
I have the 1 piece drive shaft also.
Now I found a GM ST-10 Borg Warner 4 Speed on my local cl for $400 from a Impala now would that result in me needing a longer or shorter drive shaft?
Or if i find a 88-98 2wd 5 speed could I use that drive shaft?

dont know about that trans but most time trans in cars wont work well in our trucks. think its something to do not just with the curb weight but its easier to load more junk into the truck than it is in a car

NV 3500 5 speed from
A 97-07 pickup

The full size had a 4.0 first gear and the S-10 had a 3.50 first gear ratio

Depending on your Tires and axle gear one may work better

If your truck is 2WD. The swap is way easier

My main concern is can I do a swap with out having to lengthen my drive shaft?
My truck is 2wd with the 131.5? Wb and one piece drive shaft.

I am not familiar with the NV3500 overall length but there is no drop in standard transmission that I know of that will not require some drive shaft length modification.

Is the TH350 a long tail or short tail.  A ST-10 trans is very short.  Potentially meaning you will need to lengthen the driveshaft.

It's the long tail 9" I'm not to concerned with what type manual trans to put in either a 4 or 5 speed would be fine. Just the driveshaft issue sucks

your th350 with 9" tail should be 30 11/16". you have to find a drive shaft shop near by. might luck out and be able to find one at a junkyard or off the truck where you get the trans from.
dont know if this will help but its a guy who went from a th350 to sm465

when did they put 4 speeds in Impalas?
1969?
Should be a shop within a few miles that makes shafts

Unless you live in the boonies

There are also several mail order companies

Six states
And
Tom woods

Are the largest

Id get a 5 speed from either 97-07 silverado Or 97-whenever they stopped making the S-10

Depending on your tire size and axle gearing
One may work better than the other based on the ratio of first gear
Find a donor vehicle and get as much as you can
Clutch master cylinder , slave cylinder
Resivior
Line from MC to slave cyl
Driveshaft
Shifter and boot and anything else you think you might need

Easiest way is to find a set of hydraulic pedals from a 85-87 square body and swap em in

You can make a mechanical pedal set work but it's time consuming
