92 S10 Electrical Problem
« on: January 13, 2015, 06:56:56 pm »
Hey all.  Been putting alot of time into my 92 S10, finally getting the new motor and trans in it about a week ago.  To fill you in, my truck is a 4.3L TBI/700r4 from the factory.  I replaced it with a 4.3L TBI/4l60e from a 93.  I used the factory underhood harness and ECM from the 93, so that the transmission would work, and it hasn't been modded in any way.  So, basically, under the hood, my truck is now a 93.

I've had it running, and all seems to be functioning well, except for 2 major problems...  the alternator isn't charging, and the transmission isn't shifting out of first gear.  The trans WILL shift if I shift it manually, so I know the trans isn't bad.  I looked at a wiring diagram, and both of these circuits run to the same fuse in the fuse box (ign/gau fuse, 20a).  I've checked a couple things, but I'm not good with electronics, so I'm lost.  Any suggestions?  Any tests I could do? I've pondered whether or not I need to use the dash wiring out of the 93 as well, as maybe theres something different about the fuse box?  I don't know.  Any help would be great.  Thanks in advance.

Yeah you should swap the gauges. Are you getting any DTC's? Is the VSS connected?

No DTC's that I'm aware of, or the MIL hasn't come on at least.  And yes, the VSS is hooked up, and working.  I looked for that first, as I've heard that will keep the trans from shifting.

If I remember right my jimmy had a tv cable from trans to throttle  that contros line pressure and shifting in d or od  it is imperitive you have that adjusted correctly or you will burn up the trans in no time it requires a pressure guage hooked to the trans , dont just guess and feel for correct adjustment , I havent seen the specs listed in qny manual for pressure so youhave to call dealer or a good trans shop for that , you might even want to just hqve them do it shouldnt cost much

With the 92 driveline, I had that, but the 93 transmission is electronic, all controlled by the ECM, which I did use.  I wish it was that simple.  Thanks for you thoughts though.
