stall converters???
« on: March 06, 2015, 07:33:50 pm »
Stock 305 in an 87 2wd 1/2 ton.   trans is about to be rebuilt. The peanut gallery at work is telling me to get a 2500 stall converter. I have never driven a vehicle with a stall converter, so if i understand how it works, a stall converter will not engage untill the rpm reaches the stall rating,
so what then, does it come on normally or does it launch?

imo 2500 is a waist on a street truck. stock v8 is about 1400 v6 4.3 is about 2000. i would go for the 2000 v6 1995+ 4.3 stall it will let the engine build up rpms a tad more than stock and wont effect your mpgs that bad

I had a Buick regal with a slightly built 350 with a 2000 stall.  It was very friendly driving around town,  but aloud a good launch when needed.

You will gain nothing, the trans will run hotter and you will get worse fuel mileage. Use the stock converter.

I tried several way back when in the 90s. Granted I hope they are built much better now. Stock is all you need. I grenaded 3 dacco just on the street not even pulling. An rv, street/strip & a 2200.
