Quick electrical question
« on: April 27, 2015, 07:42:03 pm »
Can anybody help me understanding the info in the wiring diagram? In this picture "2 Red-2 THERMO HW" stands for "wire number 2, red 2 gauge, thermal resistance or something like that?  The first is the wire number, color, wire gauge?  Are those two wires connected by a fuse? I need to replace the wires to/from the starter and I need to figure out what I need to buy. I would like to upgrade to a larger wire since it seems to me that the original wires are a little undersized (assuming the wires on my truck are the original). But if it is supposed to be gauge two, I won't use anything bigger. Also, it seems to me that reaching those starter bolts is pretty hard, any advice on how to replace wires between starter and junction box is very welcome. Thank you for helping me.

GM in their lack of common sense only put those leads @ the starter because it was a convenient place to put a common junction and to provide charging to the battery. To me, its completely goofy since they put a common junction upnon the firewall too. If you are interested, In offer an updated engine harness for these trucks which provides a larger (10ga and larger) main charging supply lead to the junction block. From there I include a dedicated battery charge lead which routes over to join the climate control harness and extends along the inner fender to the positive battery post. This makes the routing much cleaner in appearance and more importantly removes the vital leads away from the starter and exhaust heat. You only need to retain your main battery cable to starter and my engine harness includes a new run to the starter solenoid. I should mention this kit is for HEI trucks(1975-up).

How long does it take to install it? I am not familiar with this truck and I don't want to get myself into a job that requires too much labor...if possible. Do you have a picture of the kit?

Well, its not terribly complicated to replace-however you do have quite a few other leads to run since 1987 is TBI. That engine harness is quite a bit different from 86-older.

You're not reading that one correctly...  The wire gauge comes first.  GM used square mm rather than AWG after 1977 or 78.  There's a table in the front of most of the GM wiring manuals that translates square mm to AWG.
"2 Red-2 THERMO HW"  means "2mm² (14AWG), Red, Circuit #2, THERMO HW (Fusible Link)"  The Start wire in this diagram snippet is marked "3 PPL 6" Meaning  3mm² (12AWG), Purple, Circuit #6"
