stuck lifter
« on: May 31, 2015, 03:08:46 pm »
hello i have a 1979 chevy 305 i am putting back together to drop in my 1983 k10 till i rebuilt my 350 and i found one lifter that the inner piston of the lifter is stuck and will not move, I've taken the lifter apart as far as i can and have let it sit in a jar of transmission fluid for a few days to see if it would loosen the inner piston where i can pull it out and see if i can rebuild/clean the lifter to proper working condition. anybody know any tricks to free the inner piston? i can't think of anything else i could do. thanks for any advise

I've never tried this and probably never would, but I've heard some old hot-rodders say, you can loosen up a stuck lifter by putting a little kerosene in the oil (run it a bit and change it pretty soon after).

Since the lifter is already out, I can't imagine that soaking just it in some kerosene would hurt, just get it all out before you put the lifter back in the engine

Lifters are so cheap that if you have one sticking you'll most likely have another sticking down the road. Just replace the lot and call it a day.
