Grille Identification
« on: July 19, 2015, 08:00:47 am »
Found this truck on Craigslist and really liked the grille. If I could find one I would put a Chevy bowtie instead of the GMC. Was wondering if anybody knows what it is and who makes it. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

100% custom with a late model logo attached. I'd email the ad and ask the guy personally.

Ok, not to shoot you down Enaberif, but it's not custom at all. The only thing custom on it is the GMC emblem. I will now explain why it's not custom.

Mr Bowmank10, it is a reproduction grille for a 73-74 Chevy truck, not GMC. The middle part, the egg crate, which is black in your photos actually comes grey, the owner of that truck just did a good job of blacking it all out.

The chrome edges come in to styles, chrome and grey, he chose chrome. And it comes with a bowtie attached already, he has removed this, installed a larger, newer model GMC emblem. Now you can do the same, remove the bowtie, buy a larger, newer style bowtie for the same affect, or leave the one on it that it comes with. Personally, I would use a newer one, probably from say a 2015 Silverado 2500 or 3500 HD.

The blacked out egg crate is most visible in your 1st and 3rd pics. The 3rd pic being the most evident, you can also see the small black mounting tabs in the corners.

So, with that said, here is my proof. I have highlighted the important information so that you can see the identifying factors I have just pointed out above.

Awesome, thank-you very much LTZ.
How hard is it to swap a 73-74 grille into a 79-80?

Not very. Does your truck have an interior hood release handle or just exterior release?

Thanks Irish for editing the picture but I actually wanted the highlighted information to stay so that he could see the year and color information.

Not to split hairs ... but taking a stock grille and painting and modifying it makes it custom :P

You'll need the correct brackets and latch support for the earlier grill. The core supports were different on '73-'74 models and had brackets integral to the core support. You don't necessarily need the extra brackets for the early grill to work on the later support.

Here are the brackets you'll need for the grill:

From the item description:  "For the 1977-1980 you will just need to remove the intermediate brackets and install these."

and the grill:

A '73-'74 Chevrolet grill certainly wasn't stock on a '79 GMC...   ;D

My truck has the exterior hood release
I was also contemplating just doing a grill like this this except with a solid trim piece across the top instead of the bowtie

Any opinions?

Possibly yes, but the word "custom" is also grossly over used and mis-used. But that is not topic of discussion at this current time.

I bought a used one of those grilles once dirty cheap, spent 3 times as much on paint, made it look really nice, put it on my truck and I liked it just didn't love it. Then I found an NOS grille, did absolutely nothing to it, just put it on my truck and I LOVE it.
