Rebuilt rear end cost?

During the tear down of my engine and transmission, I found that my rear end was leaking pretty bad.  I'm pretty sure its an open diff, and 3.08 gears.  I found someone on craigslist selling a fully rebuilt rear end that had yukon 3.73 gears, eaton posi, new brakes and everything.  He offered to install it for 2100 total if I swapped him my rear end.  Is this a good deal or could I have mine rebuilt with a posi for cheaper?  I will have a 489 / 4L80E combo, is 3.73 a better gear ratio?

I just finished rebuilding the 12-bolt in my '77 (all prices Canadian, and these were the best prices I could get):

New axles & c-clips, 3.73 gears, axle bearings, ring & pinion master kit: $817CDN
Detroit TrueTrac: $537CDN  ($454USD @ Summit Racing, price listed is CDN, includes shipping)
Brake drums, shoes, wheel cylinders, wheel studs, hardware kit, can of paint for drums, $144CDN

Total spent: $1498CDN

I rebuilt the entire axle myself, and spent all day swapping axles.  Generally US dollar is a lot better than in Canada, but this may give you an idea of the parts alone.

Price out the parts through Summit or Jegs or elsewhere, then add a 3-5 hours labour to do the rebuild.  Price you found is probably not bad.

What kind of warrenty is he offering ?
$2K. seems steep.     I guess that's why I always buy a good used axle for $150-400

What axles did you go with? I'm getting ready to do the exact same thing to mine and was thinking about upgrading to yukon axles for more strength.

everything is new and he's only giving a 90 day warranty?  is he ashamed of his work?  a regular auto shop usually gives a 1 year warranty IIRC.  parts you're looking around 1200 so the rest would be in labor.

Curious what labor would be. Most places here either won't guarantee the work or won't do it at all if you bring your own parts, which means they mark up prices on the parts too.

What axles did you go with?

US Standard, which I understand is a subsidiary of Yukon.  I'm not making the power to need more strength.  Moser makes some nice stronger axles, as do others.

I just had my 10 bolt rebuilt in my twin turbo truck with new Eaton, gears, bearings and Moser Axles.  It was $1500.

I think the other rear end is sold so I may just go to a shop to have mine rebuilt. What gears does everyone recommend? I think they are 3.08 now. With the amount of torque I will make with my 489, is that ok? I'm swapping in a 4l80e so don't want to go to high and negate savings I get from putting that in. I don't plan on towing a whole lot and currently have 31.5" tires.  Also what brand gears does everyone like?
