Identify Strange Mirrors
« on: October 24, 2015, 08:27:49 pm »
Hey guys, I saw a weird set of mirrors today and I'm trying to figure out what they were. I was driving thru town and saw this (no offense here to you members of age) old timer driving next to me. He was in what I think was a mid- 70's square body. It looks like it was pretty much all original truck, with the exception of fog lights bolted to the bumper and possibly these mirrors I'm trying to identify.

The truck was a GMC, 2 tone blue and white, full chrome trim, cargo light, 2 wheel drive, the fender emblem was the big square ones that had "GMC" on the left and on the right side it said "Sierra Grande" on top and "15 Hundred" on bottom. I was hoping the emblems would help you guys tell me what year it was. I didn't get a good look at the grille, the fog lights were on and actually pretty bright so it was hard to see past those and the head lights that were also on.

The mirrors in question, they had a somewhat square shaped mount, the sides slanted downward and inline like an upside-down pyramid but the bottom was flat, no point, maybe 4 inches tall, about 3 inches wide at the top and about 2 inches wide at the bottom, 2 screws in the top, 1 screw in the bottom, in the middle (I think). The little arm came out of the bottom of the mount in an almost "L" shape, the bottom horizontal part of the "L" was parallel to the body of the truck and the vertical part of the "L" was actually horizontal and pointed away from the body, looked like the arm was no longer than about 4 inches, the mirror head was bolted to the top of the arm and it looked like almost at the end of the arm. The mirror head it self was about the size of the regular below-eye-level mirror heads, except the bottom of the mirror was what looked like maybe 1 inch wider than the top, the sides slanted inward like a pyramid. On the back side of the mirror, the top slanted out and downward toward the bottom. It looked like it had 1 bolt holding it to the arm.

If it makes any sense, I believe ford trucks from the 80's or 90's had mirrors with similar shaped mirror heads.

I hope my description was good enough for you guys. Did the best I could to examine them while driving, my girlfriend tried to take a pic but the pics kept coming out blurry, road was kinda crappy.

I'm gonna start searching the web. I've never seen a mirror like it on these trucks so trying to figure out where it came from. Hopefully one of you will know what I'm talking about. Thanks guys!

Lol that's no bueno. I may have to resort to drawing a picture, I'm just pretty sure that might end badly. I'll try tomorrow and if it comes out right I'll try to post some pics.

Holy crap Jason! I think that's them! I don't remember that arm looking like that but I was doin 50 mph and trying to rubber neck and drive. Plus the chrome didn't look that great. But I think you may have found them, everything about your pic looks right. The arm and mount look undersized compared too the mirror head, your pic matches that.

I'd seen those a lot back in the 80's & 90's. They're an aftermarket, universal mirror...

Well they are hideous haha. I'm pretty sure that is them. Universal explains why I've never seen them before. Really, those things look bad...

73-74 GMC were the years with the rectangular fender badges. My 75 Blazer had odd mirrors on it too when I picked it up, never did find out what those came off of.

Oh ok, that makes sense. This had full trim front to back, cargo light, I think it had the 2 sabre tooth bumper-ette things on either side of the license plate and the big brushed aluminum trim panel on the tailgate.

I <3 everything about the 73-74 GMC's. The rectangular fender badges, the tailgate, the grille, the interior all the little unique things that made them slightly different.
