Transfer case shifting

My 77 k-10 is an all time four wheel drive truck I cant remember what transfer case this would make it but I read on the sun visor that I can shift from high to low with the transmission in neutral but when I try it it sounds like it's grinding, I have to shut the truck off to shift it then start it back and it's fine. Am I shifting wrong or is it another problem?

If your truck has full time four wheel drive, it should be an NP203. The shifter grinding is probably the result of loose/worn or out of adjustment shift linkage. Very common. It could also be that years of accumulated dirt and debris has gotten into the shifter causing it to not want to engage. I would remove the boot on the floor and try oiling the linkage from the top and then crawl underneath the truck to get to the rest. Try that before adjusting anything and report back.

It is pretty stuffed with mud around the linkage, I'll try that and let you know!

are you sure youre in neutral with the truck stopped? if your in neutral and stopped nothing in the trans should be turning. ive shifted a 205 from low to high while going down the road but not so sure on a 203

treat it like a power take off system - leave truck in gear when shifting into hi or low even on a standard keep it in 2nd or higher -

Okay after reading that I definetly will be tightening up my linkage and cleaning it up but I'm a little confused, rich said to switch out of neutral on the t case, the transmission should be in park which doesn't make sense to me because to switch from H to L you have to go through neutral on the t case when you should be able to shift from H to L in neutral on the transmission

if you leave it in gear and put the t case in neutral the trans will spin as if you took your foot off the brakes

ok I've never even attempted shifting the transfer case while the transmission was in gear. Only neutral. On the 203 the shifting is LO LOC-LO-N-H-H lOC. It's all time four wheel drive so it's always in four wheel drive. I have no clue about the Hubs, all I can say is it's totally stock

that part about being in gear was for jg. i dont see why you shouldnt be able to shift from neutral or park. your hubs should be automatic hubs from the factory. most times manual hubs got put on when the part time kit was installed. but can you shift it in park? and you wernt moving when you had the trans in neutral and tried to shift? even though i been mudding and driving these trucks for years i sometimes forget how to shift it in 4wd lol a manual trans is one deal then a auto is a different deal then the transfer cases are a little diffrent

No I don't move while in neutral, only a complete stop I've tryed shifting. In park it seems to shift fine but then when I shift down to drive it makes a weird noise for like 2 seconds

I have a full time 203.  when I shift into low range, I have the trans in neutral, and I move the shift lever quickly through neutral (x-fer case) into low.  seems to work for me, at least it doesn't make any bad noises.  I did pressure wash all the crap off the linkage and oiled it good right after I got the truck.  linkage was so stiff I could hardly shift it at all.  don't know if this helps or not
