Exhaust cutouts
« on: January 29, 2016, 01:49:33 pm »
I was thinking about getting an exhaust cutout for my 78. I would like the option to give the truck a louder exhaust sometimes. I wouldn't get the electric one because i have heard the wires have the tendency to get messed up in the heat. Right now the truck is original. I want input on what you guys think. Should i get one, or should i keep it as is. If any of you have had one could you tell me if you liked it or not. I want an old school muscle kind of sound, i don;t want to get a whole new exhaust or any of that. The cutout is cheap and gives you the sound right from the engine.

an exhaust cutout is not going to give you a muscle kinda sound. its gunna give you a straight pipe sound that will not sound good and being dumped under the body will just make it worse.

you dont have to get a whole new exhaust to replace the stock muffler with an aftermarket one like a Flowmaster or a glasspack

Why in the world would you want to do that? Unless you are going street to strip it is pointless unless you are just trying to make noise and make all of the tree huggers who hate our trucks hate them worse.

you will also lose noticeable power with the cutouts.

Back in 65 or 66 the family car was a 64  4dr Impala with all the bells and whistles available back then. Big brother who was in high school at the time took the car to shop at the high school, cut holes in the left and right exhaust pipes ( w/o the knowledge or consent of parents) and welded on a couple of cutouts. Unfortunately he and his buddies used gas tank filler extensions with the old type metal gas caps to close them off. Mom worked in town at the courthouse and bro and her rode back and forth together everyday. As fate would have it on the way home that day the gas caps vibrated loose from the extensions ........Mom almost wrecked the car and was p'od . Dad took it in stride and said lets go hear what it sounds like, listened , looked at bro and "fix it......by tomorrow evening......."  I learned a lot about how to go about doing things that one shouldn't be doing by watching my older brother and adjusting my modus operandi.....

No doubt. I ran my truck with open headers when I was a kid. I showed up at my buddies house and pictures started flying off of the walls. It was cool for about 20 minutes but I didn't need to give the cops another reason to chase me
