It should be a steel cable. On one end is the orange plastic arrow and a spring. The other end has a metal clip. So it looks something like this
WMWM-=^=----------[]
spring indic. cable clip
The spring end has a small hole it hooks in. The cable goes to the right (if you're facing the windshield) goes around a small round hook and comes back to the left where the plate hooks in a L-shaped notch on the bottom of the steering column. You loosen the screw in the clip and slide it around the notch until the indicator arrow is pointing to the correct gear. As you shift gears the steering column rotates, pulling on the cable, and sliding the indicator. It takes some trial and error to get it set perfect.

Here, I drew on a picture i found online. The red line shows where the cable is supposed to loop around.
The square with the hole is the clip that hooks in the slot on the steering column. Good Luck.

As far as I know, you can't get just the cable as no one reproduces just that. You're going to need to either check the junkyard or order a reproduction from any number of aftermarket suppliers. The entire assembly is being reproduced as a brand new part. I've gone that route before and had great results.

If you don't want to do that, you could very easily rig something up with a small piece of speaker wire, or something similar, but you will probably fight adjusting it without the designed clip. Here is a link to a replacement my friend:

I crimped an electrical eyelet on the broken end of the cable where the clip used to go.
