Vacuum Advance
« on: April 13, 2016, 06:29:25 pm »
Hey all,
I have an '81 C/10. I recently dropped a Blueprint engines 383 stroker with roller cams in it.  I tuned it up about as far as i could but wanted to take it to a shop and have them just check everything out once again and make sure it was good to go. I found a shop around the area that was highly recommended for working with carborated engines so i took it to them.  They contacted me after a few hours and told me that what the problem was that engine was pulling too much vacuum and that they were going to change the spring in the distributor to fix it.  They then called me the next day and told me they got it good to go and they went a different route of fixing it. They told me that they pulled the vacuum advance line off.  I have been trying to do research as to if that would be a good fix or bad.  I have read some people say they it works for engines with a larger then stock cam which my engine has so i wanted to get a consensus on what everyone on here thinks about it.  Should i keep it running like that? (it runs, drives, and sounds amazing) or should i take it back to them and have them do the fix with the spring instead. I am mainly using this truck as an around town vehicle but i am going to be doing the hot rod power tour this year as well.  I am more concerned with long running life of the engine. I don't want this thing detonating on me within the first year of having it.

If you are happy with it throughout all modes of operation, idle to WOT then leave it alone or upgrade the ignition system altogether.

Why did they pull the line off? Was it spark knocking (sounds like marbles in the hubcaps)? You'll loose some fuel mileage with that off, and drive ability will suffer a little. all it does is adavance the timing a little during high vacum situations to get a more thorough burn in the combustion chamber. There's really no reason to pull it and leave it off, there is no part of a distributor that can't be adjusted. You may have to buy an adjustable advance pod though. The way to tell if yours is adjustable is to see if there is a little flathead screw way down in the vacum port of the pod.
