Should I keep the charcoal canister in my 73 build?

No performance hit and it actually keeps the garage from smelling like raw fuel.

If you don't like the visual presentation stuff it under one of the battery trays and re-route the hoses or find some other place to hide it.

if its not needed for inspection then remove it but i would set it aside if you have the room so just in case if you need it you can find it

unless you want to smell gas around your truck all the time keep it, it will make it a lot easier to tell if you have a fuel leak or not without the constant smell of gas

There are three connections to the evap can.
Tank vapor vents.
Vapor purge teed into PCV hose.
Purge control vacuum teed into distributor vacuum advance hose.

There are lots of different shaped evap cans with the three basic connections that could be mounted under the cab to hide them.

Most carbs used on these trucks have float bowls vented inside the air filter so there are no bowl vent hookups.

Mine has vent from carb teed into air cleaner assy.  And the other line off of the canister goes to the fuel tank.

Rochester 2G and Quadrajet carbs vent the bowl straight up next to the choke plate.  I fill the bowl through the vent to prime em after sitting.  It's some of the 1G carbs on the I6 where you get the external vent.

I don't have a stock setup., I have a Holley 4010 square bore 650, soon to be replaced with a Proform 650 double pumper. I currently have just the hose hooked up that goes to the as tank.

Some aftermarket carbs have external bowl vents.  They were sometimes vented to the air cleaner.
