New yoke bolts on an 86 c10, grade 5 or grade 8?
« on: May 19, 2016, 03:16:09 pm »
Hello all, I know this seems like a silly question but the only correct size and length I can find for my yoke are grade 5 bolts.
The yoke on my truck has damaged threads but only at the start. the threads continue deeper but the stock bolts are not long enough to reach the good threads. I need them to be about 1-1/2" in length and fully threaded.

Will I end up just needing to replace the yoke?

you should be able to get a bolt/strap kit from any auto parts store. If no one lists them locally order them from Summit

Yeah, the problem aren't the bolts, its the threads on the yoke piece itself. I went ahead and ordered a new yoke, I hope to get it installed and done this weekend.

You could also chase the threads with a tap and see if the clean up good. Sometimes its dirt and corrosion that booger up threads and all the need is cleaned with a tap and some lube.

Thanks for the suggestion, I had already tried that and no luck, in fact the bolts wont hold on tight anymore!

Well I've just run into a confusing mess  :-\

My truck is a 1986 c10. it came factory with a 5.0L engine, a 4 speed tran and has 3.08, 12 bolt rear end.

The previous owner had a late 70's corvette 350 with a 3speed trans installed and that is what currently is installed.

I ordered a new yoke from Amazon but it wo'nt work, it is too big - Dorman 697-500

I saw this number stamped on the driveshaft -3790024

I can't find any relevant info on the driveshaft that could help me find the right yoke, I do get a lot of 60's posts pop up when I search the number. Nothing concrete though.

Is there a way to find the correct yoke for my application?

86 did not come with a 12 bolt. Look up a 75 c10 instead

wow what a research project this has turned out to be!  Thanks Vile for the info,

I checked on   for any info I could find and like you said, the 86 trucks did not come with 12 bolt rears, only 10 bolt. the years they place range from 73-87 though.

My next search was for an early 70s rear end. They do come with 12 bolt 5 lug rears like I have. those years range from 68-72.

Right now that is the year range I will be looking at, I am glad I found this out before replacing my rear brakes, it will make ordering parts much easier!

I have also found out that Chevy 12 bolt rear ends are found in passenger cars and trucks, they are similar their internals are not interchangeable! Luckly the yokes are and that is all i'm concerned about at the moment. I would like to know exactly what year the rear end is.
