radiators
« on: May 19, 2016, 08:25:20 pm »
I'm stuck.  I've searched and read and read and searched.

The new 400 will need a good radiator.  I have the old stock 3 core.  I have a new aluminum single core replacement that will fit.  I have a new #730 two core that is 2" to high.  The #730 is "supposed to" fit.  Must need a bigger hammer.

I could spend a bazillion dollars on a Griffin and I suppose I'll have to but before I spend anymore money on cooling, what are other people doing to replace their rads?

if its only 28" or slightly bigger it should fit. might have something else in the way or not properly seated

It's about two inches too high.  The only hope is to find or fab a different support.  Maybe a whooooole lot of zip ties!

Were there two different height radiators for these truck or do manufacturers just pull sizes out of their ass?

if the rad is 28-28.5" its the stock height and will fit with no mods. if the rad doesnt fit and its those sizes then theres a problem with your truck. it could be the rubber mount inst in the right place on the bottom or youre not correctly seated in the rubber mounts

The width is good.  The radiator fits right as it should on the bottom support. The height is the issue.  The stocker measures approximately 18.5 high.  The 730 radiator is over 20.

Even if I take the rubber pads out it won't fit.

sorry about that i was posting the width not the height. what engine did you have before? want to say that different motors came with different mounts/rubber

Original engine is a 305. The rubber pads only raise it 1/4 inch.  With no rubber pads at all it's still almost 2" too high.  And this radiator is described as a direct replacement.

the pads are dependent on engine size and ac just like the rubber mounts depend on the rad and the brackets depend on the years. theres prob about 4 or 5 different combinations for the pads themselves

Given that the radiator is too high without any pads at all, the pads can't be the problem.

Is there more than one upper (or even lower) support?

They list all of the sizer variations right in the listings so all you need to do is break out a tape measure. Perhaps you have the wrong upper mount for the larger radiator.

These are the top mounts for the tall radiator. The short one is a single metal piece.

I've found a photo of a few different upper mounts.  The ones that Capt. Swampy posted seem to be for the older up to 72 trucks.  This one looks the most promising.  Any further input?
