86' C10 Distributor cap, rotor & wiring!
« on: September 19, 2016, 01:20:19 pm »
Hello, I have an 86' Chevrolet C10 w/a 5.7L with a 650 Demon Eliminator carb Silverado Edition.
Last night coming home the truck suddenly just died. So of course I checked the three main must have's, fuel air & spark.
Have fuel & air, NO SPARK.
Took off my distributor cap in the center of the cap what I can best describe as what looked like corrosion.
Ate a huge hole right in center of cap.
My question is, if I replace my distributor cap, distributor cover, rotor and wiring do you think that will cure the problem or is there an underlying problem which caused the issue in the first place?
I was going to use these.
MSD Ignition Cap and Rotor Kit, HEI, Extreme, Includes PN 84111, 84101, 84022
Will I be able to?
Will I need anything else?
Thank you!

Generally, that happens when the carbon button or brush wears out and starts arcing to the rotor.  If the cap is burned to the point of appearing cavernous, if the coil insulation appears locally chalky and/or there is evidence of carbon tracking, the coil should be replaced as well.  In addition, the ignition module (ICM) may have been damaged.

For your application AC Delco should provide excellent service life and performance.

Started first crank - good to go.
Thank you!

Following item's needed:
ICM
Rotor
Cap
Coil

Put in ICM, Cap then Coil, wire end fell off. Easy fix & then the screw that the ground strap is on under the coil stripped. My Dad always did call me to strong cause I'd snap off bolts. So what I did was bend the ground strap so it grounded to another screw hole across from it Now there is only three screws holding the coil down. Hope it doesn't cause issue. Was strongly secured Was thinking on putting some glue or something to secure the forth screw. But, as I said. Running well.
Thank you for your time and consideration in this matter!
Plus the education.
Take care, be safe!

I should hope you have air!  ;D

For future reference, your must haves are compression, spark, fuel and timing. These are the basics you always want to check.
