INSTALLING GLASS IN DOORS

HOW HARD IS IT TO PUT IN NEW OR USED GLASS IN A 1974 PICKUP???  DO YOU HAVE TO UNBOLT THE CRANK UNIT OFF THE DOOR TO GET IT OUT?? THANKS!!!!!

Ye syou have to unbolt the crank. Its not a hard job but it can be a pain in the rear.

Actually you don't have to remove the window crank assembly.  You can roll the window all the way down, unbolt the lower attachment points of the guides and move the window out of the guide and push it forward.  There are reliefs in the window channel that will allow the window to be removed from the lift arms.

Is this the same process for removing the glass in a 1987?   Also having a hard time removing the door handle as well.   Do you have to disconnect the rod down at the latch assembly to remove the door handle?  I am getting close to having my cab ready for paint.

do you mean the inside or outside door handle? They are virtually the same 73-87 with a few minor differences but same concept.

I meant the outer door handle but I got that out tonight ok.  But still can't get the window out though.  I do not understand how putting the window all the way down, there is nothing to else to unbolt or take out.  I have taken out the vent window, front and rear window channels.  I don't get it!!

Take out the vent window before attempting glass removal.Its best to use masking tape around the top and front of door.Bring the glass all the way up and take the front roller off first thru the track notch. Then tilt the front of the glass upwards and roll it forward till it comes out. Install is in reverse order.

pugsy, how did you go about replacing the gasket? all i did was put it in, then rolled the window up tight and let it sit in the sun for a day...i wasn't sure how else to keep it held in there

Which gasket? The one on the bottom? If so, I didn't have to replace them.

If its like the vent window gasket,I read in a manuel something about putting oil on it so that the gasket would swell and tighten up. Can check the book if you like.

Thanks Pugsy, those pics are great.  It is funny because I tryed the same method late last night after I wrote my last reply on this forum.  I raised the window all the way up and slid it forward so the guide roller was at the opening and tryed to get the roller out but it still did not want to come because of the angle of the window.  Tryed prying a little behind the guide roller with a screwdriver but was afraid I would break the roller so I stopped, walked away and went to bed.  Did you loosen the bolts on the window crank at all so maybe the window angle would not be so steep and bind at the roller?  I will try this tonight as soon as I get home.  This forum is great and I really appreciate this help.  
    By the way I Like the yellow on the truck that you are working on there.  I recently bought a new bright yellow Hyundai Tiburon (never imagined myself owning a yellow car), but I find myself noticing more yellow vehicles now a days since buying the Tib.  Got any completed pics of the truck?

The window needs to be in the down position to remove it properly/easily.  With the vent assem out, just slide it forward and disengage the front roller then tilt it up to disengage the rear, then pull it out.

The channel on the glass could be catching the rim on the outside of the door where the felt is.Watch for that.

I didn't loosen the bracket bolts,but it couldn't hurt.They are a pain so do anything that helps.

I take the regulator bolts out and use the crank handle to operate it while holding the glass and voila! It comes out in a snap  I don't take the vent window out and it works like a charm.

I used your method Pugsy but I brought the window up on the outside of the door and came out without a problem.  Thanks for everyones help.  Who has the lowest cost window seals and weatherstripping?  Hopefully I will have the cab painted in a few weeks.
