Do you have to remove the cross member to remove the transmission pan?

Normally no but if the transmission mount is original and is squashed you may need to jack up the rear a bit to get the pan out.

its been years but i want to say on my 86 it had a th350 (not original) but it made it easier to unbolt the trans mount and slide it back to get to the back bolts on the pan

Elaborating on what has already been stated, the leading flange of the cross member shrouds the rear pan bolts and pan flange on a 700R4 making for difficult access. A flex-socket will engage the bolts with a little bit of finagling. But, to remove the pan you may need to unbolt the rear mount and raise the transmission or slide the cross member slightly rearward.

+1....just finished puttin in new filter. Before messing with pan bolts, unbolt mount off of cross member, raise tranny an back up cross member, also found that unbolting tranny mount off of tranny made cleaning, a lot easier an nicer clean up.
