75 engine tick sound
« on: November 30, 2016, 06:03:28 pm »
Have a 73 with a 75 engine. Every now and then when it was warm out while it was it ldling it I would here a ticking sound that sounds like tapping marbles together. Now that it's getting cold out it s starting to do it non-stop. It's an inconsistent slow clicking noise like i said, sounds like tapping marbles together but in no pattern. Any ideas, i don't know much, trucks starting to run like crap too.

Check valve adjustment, potentially worn camshaft  :o Could be a lot of things. Use a stethoscope to pinpoint it.

The sound comes from the drivers side of the engine, doesnt sound like it's deep in the engine

Okay I'm an idiot. I just went out to try to hear it again and it actually sounds like it might be the power steering pump or the water pump. My power steering fluid it dark brown and nasty looking. Can I take the belt off and run the engine without it to see if that is it? It woukd be such a relief is it isn't the engine lol.

Yes you can remove belts, just don't run engine long without the water pump.
