Power Window Help
« on: December 22, 2016, 08:56:10 pm »
Hey guys,

Bit of a frustrating question - Both power windows on my 85 quit working. I have the relay kit. They were working fine then---Poof! no power windows. I have checked the fuses (fine), looked for a blown fuse in the fusebox (didnt find any), tried different motors and a different driver switch. When you hit the buttons, you can here the relays (  kit) clicking but no window movement.

Any suggestions?

Thanks :-\

Checked all connections for any loose or disconnected wires?

Depending on how the relay is set up you should have all time hot to pin 87 or in some cases pin 30. If you do not have (+)power to one of these two then you are missing your main power supply somehow. if you used a fuse tap I'd check that and the inline fuse first. Also check grounds. the brand of the kit is not supported by the site so I'm not sure how it deals with the grounding circuit. Likely it is using a 5-pin relay and using 87a as the ground path for the opposing direction. Since the relay is clicking you have control/switching power so that's out of the question. If you have power at either pin87/30, the relay is clicking and the grounds are good then chances are the relay is bad. If you have a volt meter you can check this by hitting the switch and checking for continuity between pins 87 and 30. I like using the beep function if the voltmeter you have allows that function. If you do not have a voltmeter a simple test light will give the same result. just connect the alligator clip to one pin and probe the other while hitting the switch for the relay. if it lights the relay is good. hope this helps.

If your fuses are good, and you can hear the relay activate, Have you checked for power at the motor, and especially for good GROUNDS?

Thank you for the helpful tips. I will check both tomorrow.
What are the chances that all 4 relays are suddenly bad (and went bad at the same time) and would a single ground affect suddenly both windows and all 4 relays at the same time?

Probably not what you want to hear but that relay setup provides no advantages over the stock configuration. The correct way to do that requires a few extra wires added to the circuit to see any real difference in voltage drop. I have thoroughly checked, measured and compared my results when doing this myself and the best way is with a complete custom PW-PL Relay harness. I would recommend you put it back to factory configuration. Most likely you either lost a diode or have a poor ground.

Where would I have lost a diode, in one of the relays? Where would be the best place to start checking the ground(s)? The drivers switch? Before yesterday, the windows seemed to work much better, smoother and faster. What would I have to do to reconfigure the wiring to improve the circuits. FWIW, both door locks are still functional.

Update - The only problem I found was a bad passenger side motor. Power was good, grounds were good. Bypassed   relay kit and got the driver window to operate. Bypassed the   relay kit on passenger window and found the bad motor. Installed new motor, both windows now working. Have not tied the   kit back in yet, will post update when I do.

Thanks for all of the help.
