Are you talking about removing the rod from the latch lever?  If so, you need to push back the capture sleeve and pop it out.

its the rod that goes into the slot on the doorhandle mech.
the rod has a sort of a nob on the top and at the bottom the rod bends 90 degrees and goes into catch mech.does the rod dissconect at the top or down at the catch mech.there is a spring clip at the top that i took out but that din not work.i think that clip is there for antivibration.
thanks.

As Chris said it comes out on the latch end, then you can slide it up and out of the outside handle. There is a spring steel slide clip that holds the rod in. You have to pull the catch back and slide the clip back alittle bit then the rod comes out of the latch.
When I paint most of my Chevys I just unbolt the handle and pull it out of the door a bit, mask it up, and spray, then rebolt it up not disturbing the rod at all.

Some people are like Slinkies. Not really good for anything, but they still bring a smile to your face when you push them down a flight of stairs

How do you get a hold of the clip? There's no room to move inside the door at the latch.

I flip it up with a long screwdriver and push it down.  It doesn't have to come off to release...

Here's ya a pic of one of the rod for the door lock knob.  a;; the rods come off the same way though.  where the red arrow is, you pry it out to release it and then slide the clip like the blue arrow goes and then the rod will slip out.  to replace it, push the clip back like it was and then just push the rod through it till it clicks and you're done.  the rod you want can be really hard to get to, if you just can't get it you may have to unscrew the whole latch to gain access.  sometimes I can get it without unscrewing the latch, but sometimes I can't.

cool. Thank you all for helping me get the door handle off. It was very much appreciated. You know your stuff. I had to loosen the latch mechanism and broke the clip,  maybe I'll do better on the other one. Thanks again.
