Dome Light Door Switch
« on: January 01, 2007, 07:57:00 pm »
In need information on how to put a dome light switch on my 1978 Chevy 1/2 ton Truck.

The truck never had a dome light so there is a spot on the door jam where the switch that controls the off and on function when the door is opened or closed can be put.  I stuck an ice pick through the spot and it appears to be rubber. Is the whole plug rubber? Can the spot be drilled and tapped for the switch I bought for this purpose?  The switch only has one pole so I assume it is a ground wire connecton for the dome light.  Is this true?

Any help or advice would be greatly appreciated.  I have never installed a dome light before.

Thanks for any help.

when you open the door the switch closes and a path to ground is provided through the switch to the light. The light is supplied with B+ through a fused 20Amp circuit.

If there is a plug in the hole there might be threads there too.If not drill and tap some. You could go to the boneyard and get the light, wires and switch.Orange and white are the wire colors and you can plug the orange into to the fuse box. The white is ran to the switch for the ground, to complete the circut.

the original circuit gets power from the headlight switch, HOT wires run to each door jam, 3 switches, the headlight when rotated and/or door jams when opened, connect to GROUND turning on the light.

Thanks to everybody for their input.  Special thanks for the diagram of the dome light circuit.  Now that's what I needed.  :D   I think I can handle it now.
