Spec's needed for '86 305 4 BBL
« on: February 03, 2017, 02:00:59 pm »
Hi Guys,

I'm working on an '86 Step side with a 305 and a 3 speed with overdrive. Bought it sitting in a field. The engine had a blown head gasket. Opened it up and the engine seems pretty clean all told.  Would anyone have the spec's for this engine?  Just a 305, 4 Barrel, single exhaust. would like the horsepower and torque specs to see if I may want to just warm this engine up a bit, or just do it stock. I will be adding headers.

Can anyone help with those spec's?

You mean a 4 speed.

You need the engine code. Post a pic of your SPID label

Not having driven it, and only going by the last owner and the markings on the shifter, it says 3 W/ OD and reverse.  What is a SPID label?

Years ago we could identify most anything from the VIN, but it seems dealers can't do that anymore. I'd love to know the rear end ration and exactly what that trans is. I still have to check and see if the rear is tagged, but the tranny has me curious.

SPID = Service Parts Identification label

The sticker is located in the glovebox or on the upper surface of one of the front wheel wells below the hood and lists all of the installed service options by RPO code.

See Common Automotive Acronyms in the Technical Pages.

The only sticker under the hood is the jacking instructions. In the glove box is evidence of a sticker that was once there, but useless at this point.  The truck is an '86 C10 Step side. The engine's a 305, the trans has 4 positions and reverse, whether that is a 4 spd, or a three with OD I can't tell beyond the shifter marking. Would anyone be able to make a reasonable guess as to what the tans may be, and what might be expected behind that in the differential?

To check rear end ratio jack up rear of truck, spin a tire one rotation and count the rotations of the driveshaft.

The 305s' typically had about 150-170hp, 240ish ft-lb; all dependent on year, options and emissions.

GM used the terms 3 spd w/ * to differentiate between the available "4" spd manuals offered. Yours is most likely the 833, the other offered was the SM465- 3 spd w/ Low

Thank you all for the photo, article and comments, but, lol, I did the turn and count forty some odd years ago. If I'm going under it right now I guess I'll just pop the cover and see what shape the rear is in at the same time. I picked this up for a toy, it just takes some getting used to that FI is now EFI and doesn't involve Hillborn. Lol. That and I have a whole lot of learning to do about what will interchange with what these days.

zieg85,  Thank You, your information was right on the money. Now I know what the trans is, care to guess at what I'll find in the ten bolt rear?

If the SPID in the glove-box doesn't list an RPO (Regular Production Option) code for an optional gear ratio it's likely 2.73:1.

What I have found in my years of pulling these apart is the standard is
12bolt - 2.76:1
10bolt - 2.56:1
