foreign material in frame/door groove

1986 Chevy K10 Scottsdale w/305 and 700r Trans

I am trying to work on cleaning up the truck I just bought and will be needing to get all new door/window seals but it seems there is some metal adhered to the drain channel in the cab of the truck (apologies as I'm really not sure what this area is actually called).  I seems to be using the same type of caulking or sealant all the way up to the firewall but I'm not completely sure.  I'm not able to scratch it with a fingernail and using a screwdriver isn't much better (granted I didn't try too hard as I'm not sure what it is for).  I am thinking of just digging it out and then putting in some new sealer but wanted to get an opinion first.

*and any advice on what to use for resealing if needed after I cut these pieces out

Seam sealer, agreed, wire brush it out with a soft brass brush, clean and paint any bare spots, then install your door seal.
