All the research I've done I've never heard of a wider front bearing till the nv4500. Not sure about the  np440 they did share the same housing and it might be when the 465 switch to hydraulic

Not totally sure if it was the body style change that o what but there was a short series of the trucks 1988 - 1991 that kept the original square body design that also had the aluminum top cover SM 465 year range was 1989 to 1991 from memory.

Not saying all the model trucks from 1989 to 1991 had the aluminum top cover the ones I have seen did.

I bought one of these aluminum top cover SM 465's to avoid cutting two holes in the removable transmission tunnel as I plan to put a NV4500 in the truck and it used the shifter in just about the same location from the mount to bellhousing location (Pictured below) in my hybrid build IE I built a cab end of last year that is mostly a 1983 but has some sheet metal parts from the original cab that came on the M1031 pictured below.

This is right, got to talking with a friend at the local dealership. Sm465 in the obs(our style trucks) used the cast iron cover up to end of production in '91, the gmt400(nbs' 88 and up) used the aluminum cover because the shifter would hit the dash, so the cover was remade so the stick would sit farther back-also the 465 was an option in the gmt400 up to 98, a rare option, but I have seen 2 trucks that came with the 465, a 95 and a 97.
80 should be the first year with a 32 output spline for when the np2p8 transfer case was getting phased in. There are some minor bearing changes after 88, and some thrust washer differences after 79, so may be this is we're Novak is saying the kit won't work?

I can confirm that the sm465 in the 91 squares had the cast cover, my 91 parts truck had an sm465 pictured here just before i sold it
