Trans hits only 3 positions

My shifter lever is disconnected from my auto trans. Underneath I can turn the trans lever manually, but I can only hit three positions! Anyone know why?

Yes, I have disconnected the rod that connects the shifter on the steering column to the trans. Then I can twist the arm on the trans into three posistions. What is odd is that I can roll the truck freely back and forth in each position.

What does the transmisison pan look like?
It the driveshaft installed?

The trans pan has a slight dent in it from where I improperly jacked it up. So that might be the problem?

The driveshaft is installed.

I think Chris meant what shape is the pan so we could figure out type of transmission it is.
