Truck died and won’t start...
« on: July 28, 2018, 11:51:14 am »
Ok folks, I’m out of ideas...

I got the truck running and took her for a test drive this morning. About 10-15 min into it, she died. I was going about 45mph.

I spray starter fluid into the carb, no deal

I’ve let it cool down, tried to start it, no deal.

Ive replaced the carb and the tank selector valve and still the same issue.

Im not the most mechanically inclined guy in the room but Im willing to try just about anything...

I called the previous owner and told them what was going and and they said this was the same issue they were having with it.

Im thinking maybe the ignition system? or a fuel pump issue?

When I try to start it, it’ll turn over and when I turn the key back to the off/lock position, the truck sort of shutters a little.

Im trying to not get angry but now my truck is 100 yards up the road and I cant get it started.

Any ideas?

Probably ignition module. Did you check for spark?

Vile,

Dude, no spark... Good call. THank you!!

Found out that the distributor is remanufactured.

My ICM is a computer controlled unit. I live in California so it has to stay that way to pass smog. Also, the truck was stock with a 305. It now has a 350. I didnt put it in but it supposedly ran with no issues at some point. Is it possible that the 305 to 350 swap messed up the ICM or do they just go bad from time to time? This is a stock motor. Would I get any benefit from putting a better coil in or is stock going to be fine?

Im done working on it today. It was 113 degrees in the shade and I’m beat... I see a big glass of water, a bigger glass of beer and me being horizontal for the rest of the day in my immediate future.

Thanks again!

Also, I was checking out this thread (http://forum.73-87chevytrucks.com/smforum/index.php?topic=26482.msg220772#msg220772) and noticed that deleting the ESC (computer?) is what most folks recommend. How badly would this effect my smog results, if at all. Im guessing that the Quadrajet would go to full richness (without the ESC) and would probably send me over the top with emissions levels but that is just a guess.

This is the ignition module. If you have inspections and require visual checks, just replace the module.
