Fuel problem
« on: August 26, 2006, 09:13:00 am »
At least I think it is.....anyway I've got an 87 K10 with a TBI 350 and this is about the 3 time to happen. On cold start typically is fine but if run it for a bit it just suddenly stops and then takes awhile to get it started. No fuel odor as if flooded. This has happened while driving....it just dies.....but after coaxing for several minutes it starts and runs fine. No smoke, no miss and plenty of power. Fuel filter?, and if so, where the heck is it?....it's stock....or is this a fuel tank pump scenerio? Thanks for some starting places.

The fuel filter is located on the passenger side frame rail- I think it's aft of the door. Do you have one or two tanks? If two, each one has its own pump/sending unit in the tank. Since they are electric pumps, once they fail they stay bad.
How's your oil pressure? The oil pressure sensor has a wire attached to it that also sends a signal to the fuel pump, and if the engine gets low on oil pressure, the computer sees it and cuts out the fuel pump. It's a safety thing to save your engine. I think it can be bypassed.

First of all, do the tune up because it sounds like you've never done it but the fuel pump relay's were problematic on earlier ones.

Thanks, Don. I have dual tanks however I've never used but one as the other needs attention. It's a brand new GM crate 350, less than 5000 miles so it pegs the oil pressure. I'll check the filter first as it will start again with a little coaxing which I would assume the fuel pump, once failed, would not do. Also curious about the dual tank switch as clicking it back and forth it will eventually start......however that could be a fluke as the filter could have just backwashed enough to get it going again. Will get-r figured out.....thanks again for the filter location.

I had the same problem with my '88 4x4 Suburban I once had.  It turned out to be that the fuel pump relay was getting hot.  It's located on the passenger side, mounted on the firewall.  Two screws and a wiring harness and you're done.  Just something to take a look at.

Turned out to be the fuel filter. Thanks, Don for the location.
