Getting rid of emission stuff
« on: October 26, 2006, 06:44:00 pm »
Have an 84 sub with a 350 and a 4bbl not sure which one.The carb is crap it idles to high and i can't adjust it, i try and the srew only turns about an 1/8 of a turn either way then stops. The butterflys aren't even working, i push with my finger and there is no resistance they stay open on their own and only close when i push them down. Anyways im rambling, how hard is it to get rid of the emission stuff like the hoses and egr and crap and put on like a edelbrock carb and intake?

Well it isn't hard to get rid of the stuff.  It is illegal however.  Why not just replace the egr and replace vacuum lines, because it seems as though you have a vacuum leak with the rpms so high.  Your butterflies should only be closed when it is cold.  Or else, adjust your choke coil--if you have one on an 84. My 79 has one.

All else, get a carb kit and rebuild that.

GM used Rochester Carbs as original equipment. Can you get a can of carb cleaner and give it a good cleaning? Years of neglect might be sticking the throttle plates to their shafts. Do a google search for rochester quadrajet carburetors, and like Andy says- think about a rebuild kit. That would be lots cheaper than throwing new parts at it.

Thanks guys i think im gonna end up going the rebuild route. The reason it was stuck at high idle was the cam sensor was stuck  or i think thats the name but anyways its doing better just need to give it a good cleaning. Thanks Dennis
