Yeah, i know it is the tire circumferene, I just don't see too many low profile tires on 18" wheels in my area on these trucks.  It is a little common sensical about what changes the rear ratio--atleast it should be.  Just don't overlook wheel/tires when determining rear ratios.

And don't forget to re calibrate your speedo when ratios are changed.

Where are you from SgtDel? Everyone around here runs low profile tires on larger wheels.

The capital of the CSA Richmond.

Nope, not many of those on pickup trucks.  I see a lot on sedans and foreign jobbies. I am not saying there are none.  Most pickup trucks around here are used for practical purposes, and not for show---I'd like to see a 4x4 with those low profile tires on the outer banks of N.C. on the beach, or out in the fields hunting--that would be a sight.

I have seen those things on newer SUV's and such--they look horrible--perhaps I am old-fashioned.

Ok My tires are 265/75/R16 - So they are about 26-27 inches tall.

I dont know what gears Im running now but they suck.

I am gonna be traveling about 30 mins to work once I get to my new house, So I will be crusin at like 65 or so.

So you think I shouldnt get 3:73's with that drive, I already get crappy MPG cause of my carb runnin rich.

30 mins driving 65?  I'd go with 3.42 myself. You don't want to keep your engine winding high w/ those kind of rpms if you go to 3.73--it would be like being in 2nd gear all the time.  You'd be in third, but you'd think there would be another gear to go into due to the rpms so high.

If your after better low end sound like you have the wrong intake/cam package on your truck. Both are suited for high end power. You can make good power with that 305 by down sizing your carburetor to a 390cfm up to 600cfm I would not go any larger than 600cfm's on a 305. Your best bet for cam and intake are the matched edelbrock performer cam/intake package they are your best bang for your buck for low end. Also if you check ebay you can find them dirt cheap used if you want to save some money. I would find out exactly what rear end gears you actually have before you go changing them out you may already have the optimum gears and just don't realize it.

I agree with dump. I had a 77 1/2 ton short step with 3.73s with 275/60/15s
I built a mild flat top 305 with Edelbrock Performer cam ( same exact cam as the  Summit cam mentioned earlier, Performer intake 570 CFM Holley carb, small tube headers. pulled strong to over 5500  RPMs. ran mid 14s in 1/4.....far from fast by any means, but it was fun.
I also built a little healther 305 for my 86 ElCamino, 10:1 L-98 aluminum Vette heads, performer intake, 570 Holley. 13.30s with 3.08 gears : )

Well I am gonna replace brakes soon, as my brakes have went once I got to the mountains, I am a Country boy not a mountain man.

So after that I will look into Edelbrocks Cam and Lifter combo for the Performer RPM intake.

I noticed too, After being up here at around 1600 ft. My truck runs like a champ, The Low end tourqe is good and its faster,

So I may hold off on gears for a while, and get the Front Fiberglass Fenders and Hood, and Modify that cam.

I thank you all alot for your help, as you have answered my question in so many helpfull suggestions.
