87 fuel problems!
« on: January 16, 2007, 08:06:00 am »
ok i am new here with a question!

i have an 87 4x4 pickup fuel injected.. the truck has sat for 1 1/2 years without being started. the truck was running and being driven daily when it was parked but it belonged to my uncle who had health problems and passed away and i wanna get it going again!

the truck is not getting gas!!!! you can pour gas in the throttle body and she fires right up but as soon as that burns off she dies! i dont think the fuel pump is working at all! is there a fuse?? a relay??? a way to see if the fuel pump is getting fire??? anything??? i am really needing to know how to get to this stuff to test it!!!!!

Thanks for any help!

When you switch the key on, you should be able to hear the pump prime up.  If you don't, the pump needs to be replaced.

hey i have an 87. i had the same problem as you and it was the fuel tank selector switch in the cab. but this is only if you have dual tanks. if yours has dual tanks, switch tanks and see if either sends fuel, if they don't, it's probably the switch in the cab or both fuel pumps are gone at the same time(which i doubt). the hot wire that runs the fuel pumps goes thru that switch so if your switch is bad then you won't get any power to the fuel pumps. this was my problem, yours may be different.

Yes there is a fuse yes there is a relay. There is also a test lead near the fuel pump relay to energize the pump.
