I got a 700r4 from my father in law that got a 87 burb it was in. Theres something wrong with the tranny but i was wondering how hard is it to rebuild one and what instruction manual would be the best at showing me how to do it?

There are several books and videos on rebuilding tranys,I've seen some at summitracing.com, there more or less all the same. If you have basic mechanical ability it should be too stressful. The first 400 (475) I rebuilt over 15 yrs ago is still going strong, and it lives behind a 500Hp 454.

Is there any special tools that are needed for rebuild or tear down? Also I was looking on Ebay and they have 2 different books on certain year models. Is there a difference? The tranny I got came out of a 87.

yes there are a few special tools you will need.

You can improvise and make a trans pump puller easily, you can easily make a seal installer with some mig wire and a piece of 1/4 brake line, but you will need a piston compressor like this


feeler gauges, trans gel or vaseline, organization and a clean bench. If you have an old stool, cut a hole in the middle and it will make a great stand too.

I used two c clamps and little blocks of hardwood instead of that device.

The problem with that is you can't change the low reverse clutch piston seals inside the unit very easily and you risk damaging the return spring plate. I have a bench mounted design like this that works great for out of unit service

And this one I used most often... It works great for internal unit service. I've also used it for several other things other than automatic transmission work. :D

On that tranny they are showing 2 books one for 82-86 and the other 87 and up. The only numbers i could find on it was 8663549. Im just trying to figure out the year so i can get the right book. Anyone know how i can find out what year model tranny i got?

id number

I found the id number on the tranny. It reads 7TUM203H.

Im guessing its a 87 model? TU means a truck, 203 is the date in the year it was made and H im not for sure.
