Smeding Performance 383
« on: January 26, 2007, 06:18:00 pm »
Anyone have any experience with Smeding Performance crate motors (www.smedingperformance.com)?  I am considering their "Brute Torquer" 383 (approx. 340 hp / 430 lb/ft).  It seems to be a better value than the GMPP HT383 I thought was settled on.

Never heard of them myself but I'd be afraid based on their name alone! :lol  Sounds like Smegma performance. Why not build a 383 yourself? Or better yet pick up a 400 sb! ;)

Do they offer a waranty? Parts and labor? if they do is it comparable to GMs? Whats the price compared to GMs?

Some people are like Slinkies. Not really good for anything, but they still bring a smile to your face when you push them down a flight of stairs

They offer a better warranty 2 yr vs. 1 yr for GMPP.  And they are about $200 dollars less than the HT383 (from Scoggin Dickey).  The only difference between the two is that the HT383 uses a special 3.8" forged crank whereas the Smeding engine uses a nodular iron 3.75" crank.  But a forged crank isn't necessary until above 500hp and 6,000 rpms, and the smeding engine uses better pistons and forged rods.  In my opinion its a better built engine for the money.

I hear that smeding is very popular among street rodders in Cali, but I was hoping someone here had heard of them.

I think you're talking about Smedding , in Rancho Cordova, Ca. Chevy Hi Performance mag has used their engines for a few buildups and gives them high marks.
